From 1 November 2021 parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents can qualify for an exemption to travel to Australia on a temporary visa.
There are several categories for someone to qualify for a travel exemption to Australia. Previously parents were not included, unless there were compelling and compassionate reasons. The Department has now made it easier for families to reunite, including parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents as an exemption category.
The increase in vaccination rates has allowed the positive change.
If you would like your parent/s to visit you, the process is as follows:
- Apply for the visa, such as a Visitor visa
- Immediately lodge a separate application for a travel exemption
- The travel exemption will be processed first, usually within a few days, once approved the Department will process the visa application
We can help by making it a very easy process for you and your parent/s, and will make sure it is lodged completely and correctly. For further information or to start the application, please contact us on 0404 041 173 or complete our enquiry form.
